The growing availability of online casinos and other instruments for wagering has brought the Federal Families Minister of Australia, Jenny Macklin, to actively air concerns about the rise in problems associated with expanded land and internet gambling industries. This has been a heavily discussed topic over the conference this week. The federal government seems to be at wits end over the rapidly increasing demand for online casino gambling as a form of entertainment which the Minister suggests should be taken into accord for further discussions by the state and territory ministers the following year.

The newspaper, Courier-Mail, noted in its report that statistics have shown that Australians will spend as much as $1 billion on online casino gambling this current year alone. Minister Macklin expressed fears that this could push gambling up to a large scale problem all throughout the country with the way the poker machines have extensively expanded. Gaming in online casinos is still illegal aside from sports betting and lotteries. Australians, however, opt to be entertained by accessing offshore-based sites to circumvent the said banning. Courier-Mail further reported that Dr. Sally Gainsbury, a researcher from Southern Cross University’s Center of Gambling Education and Research, pointed out that the estimated forecasted growth of the gambling industry in the internet will reach as high as A$30 billion by the year 2025 from A$21 billion in the year 2025.

According to Courier-Mail, Dr. Gainsbury concluded that the existing set-up of gambling within Australia will provide more problems because there is no protection of privacy for the customers as well as out-of-control gambling by the players. A Productivity Commission was prearranged at the early part of this year to study the recommendation of legalizing online casino gaming but the federal government is persistent about its stance to continue banning it.
